surface profile gage

Surface Profile Gage – Simple and Reliable Surface Height Measurement

A Surface Profile Gage is a precision hand-held tool designed to measure the peak-to-valley height (surface profile depth) of prepared surfaces, especially after abrasive blasting or surface treatment. Unlike advanced profilometers, the surface profile gage provides direct, quick measurements using a pointed stylus and mechanical or digital readout, making it ideal for field inspections and on-site applications.

This tool plays a critical role in verifying that surface roughness falls within acceptable ranges for coating adhesion, corrosion protection, and overall surface integrity. Used widely in industries where surface preparation is vital, these gages offer rugged construction, portable use, and measurement reliability that complies with standards such as ASTM D4417, ISO 8503-1, and SSPC PA-17.

Key Features of Surface Profile Gage

Precise Surface Texture Measurement

Accurately measures surface profile for quality control in coatings and finishes.

Easy-to-Read Display

Provides clear, digital readouts for quick analysis of surface profiles.

Portable and Lightweight

Compact design allows for easy on-site testing in various environments.

Versatile Use

Compatible with various materials, such as metals, plastics, and coatings, ensuring versatile applications.

Applications of Surface Profile Gage

  • Shipbuilding & Marine Coating Inspections
  • Oil & Gas Pipeline Surface Preparation
  • Structural Steel Surface Profiling
  • Bridge Maintenance & Anti-Corrosion Projects
  • Tank & Vessel Coating Validation
  • Industrial Painting and Blasting Quality Checks

How to Use a Surface Profile Gage

  1. Surface Cleaning: Wipe off dust, loose particles, or blasting residue from the test area.
  2. Zero Calibration: Place the gage on the glass reference plate and adjust the dial or digital readout to zero.
  3. Align the Gage: Position the gage stylus at a 90-degree angle to the surface and apply light pressure until the tip makes full contact for an accurate reading.
  4. Record Readings: Note down multiple readings across the surface to calculate an average profile height.
  5. Document Results: Log the data manually or use digital storage (for electronic models) to ensure traceability.
